A HEAD-ON COLLISION RESULTS IN UNFORTUNATE FATALITY
On Tuesday, December 31st of 2024 (New Year’s Eve), a fatal accident happened in Snohomish County. A 50-year-old woman from Stanford was driving a Lexus east on US Highway 2 by Machias Road. Near milepost 6 on the road, the Lexus driver crossed the centerline and hit a westbound Honda CRV head-on. The driver of the Honda, also a 50-year-old woman, hailed from Monroe. The two women were the only people in their vehicles. The collision happened at high speeds, with devastating consequences.
One of the cars was pushed off the road so violently that it was embedded into the ground, the front of the vehicle was completely destroyed. The other vehicle stayed on the road, coming to a rest sideways. The front of that vehicle was also mangled from the crash. Items from inside the vehicle, including clothing, were left strewn all over the street. The woman’s purse was still sitting on the passenger seat. At 6:43 in the morning, crews from Snohomish Regional Fire and Rescue, Snohomish County Fire District #4 (SCFD4), and the Everett Fire Department were dispatched to the accident scene. Later on, the Incident Response Team (IRT) and troopers from the Washington State Patrol arrived at the scene.
Unfortunately, both women involved in the accident died at the scene of the accident. Because there were no other occupants in the vehicles, no other injuries or deaths occurred. The women have been identified, but their names have not been released to the public yet, so that authorities have time to notify loved ones of their passing. It isn’t known what factors lead to the crash, whether that be fatigue, drugs, alcohol, or something else. With both people involved being deceased, it makes the investigation more difficult. More information is likely to come out about the deadly crash soon. Snohomish County Fire District #4 stated that their thoughts are with both the victims and first responders. They urge drivers to do their part and stay safe on the roads for the sake of themselves and others.
US Highway 2 was closed by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) in both directions on Tuesday morning, between State Route 9 and 88th Street Southeast. WSP troopers set up detours so that they could investigate the accident scene, and clear away the debris. KIRO Newsradio traffic reporter Chris Sullivan urged drivers to avoid the area and drive cautiously. Drivers were encouraged to turn back to State Route 9 or go back down to 88th Street. People leaving Monroe were not able to drive west of 88th Street because of the accident blocking the road. People trying to enter Monroe were not able to get east of State Route 9. Shortly after 11 in the morning, US Highway 2 was reopened in both directions after being shut down for several hours.

AUTO ACCIDENT VICTIMS
Here at Seattle Injury Law, we have reported on local head-on collisions before. Usually, this type of accident happens when a driver is impaired somehow or confused. A large number of head-on auto accidents also involve wrong-way drivers. Head-on collisions are more common than you would think, accounting for over half of all accidents involving multiple vehicles. Head-on collisions are also some of the most dangerous accidents because of the opposing forces.
People that were injured in head-on collisions often suffer catastrophic, disabling, and even life-threatening injuries. These injuries can make it difficult to function, do daily activities, and work. The medical expenses incurred from being in an accident quickly add up. There’s many factors that cost money when a person is dealing with the aftermath of an injury from an accident. There’s the cost of the initial medical treatment, as well as follow-up appointments and ongoing care. Injuries can also cause people to miss out on wages when they’re not working, or make it impossible to work at all. All of these damages need to be taken into account when filing a personal injury claim.
The Revised Code of Washington (RCW) states that victims are entitled to recover compensation for current and future lost income due to accident injuries. Accident injury victims can also receive compensation for economic and noneconomic damages such as: property replacement and repair costs, medical expenses, pain and suffering, psychological distress, disfigurement and disability, and paying for in-home services. If your loved one died in an accident that wasn’t their fault, you can recover compensation to cover funeral expenses, as well as for damages such as loss of companionship, loss of income, and emotional trauma.
